Plastic Jesus, ένας «πλαστικός» Μεσσίας στον χώρο της street art
Πρώτη φορά είδε ένα κομμάτι γκράφιτι στο Λονδίνο γύρω στο 1970 που έγραφε πως «ο George Davis είναι αθώος», ο ίδιος ποτέ δεν έμαθε ποιος είναι ο George Davis, αλλά ήξερε -όπως μας λέει- ότι ήταν αθώος. Τουλάχιστον σύμφωνα με τους υποστηρικτές του που το ζωγράφισαν. Αυτό τον έκανε να σκεφτεί τους ανθρώπους που βάζουν ένα μήνυμα σε δημόσιους χώρους.
«Δεν υπάρχει τίποτα στον κόσμο που να με ενοχλεί περισσότερο από τους ανθρώπους που κρατούν το χαρτί περιτυλίγματος χριστουγεννιάτικων δώρων όλο το χρόνο, μόνο και μόνο για να το χρησιμοποιήσουν το επόμενο έτος. Διατηρείς χαρτί αξίας 5 δολαρίων για 364 ημέρες; Είσαι τρελός (!)», με αυτόν τον τρόπο ο Plastic Jesus περιγράφει τον εαυτό του. Ένας εκκεντρικός τρόπος σκέψης που αναμφισβήτητα αποτυπώνεται και στο έργο του ως street artist.
Από τις διάσημες πινακίδες "No Kardashian Parking Anytime" που εγκατέστησε σε δρόμους του Λος Άντζελες, την μικρή κατασκευή που έφτιαξε για να περιφράξει το αστέρι του Αμερικανού Προέδρου στο Χόλυγουντ μέχρι και τα πελώρια αγαλματίδια Οscar που εμφανίζονται μυστηριωδώς λίγο καιρό πριν την τελετή, είναι σίγουρο πως ο Plastic Jesus έχει πολλά που θέλει να πει.
Το γεγονός πως είναι Βρετανός, ανώνυμος και με έξυπνα σχόλια για την πραγματικότητα -που ίσως περνά απαραίτητη για αρκετούς- έκανε την εφημερίδα "Daily Beast" να τον ανακηρύξει «Banksy του Λος Άντζελες». Ωστόσο, ενώ στην περίπτωση του Banksy πρέπει πολύ συχνά να μαντεύουμε τις απαντήσεις, με τον Plastic Jesus αρκεί να τον ρωτήσεις. Το ψευδώνυμο του προήλθε από τις πλαστικές φιγούρες του Ιησού που τοποθετούν όσοι πιστεύουν στο ταμπλό του αυτοκινήτου. «Βλέποντας όλους τους πιστούς να οδηγούν στο Λος Άντζελες έχοντας αυτά τα μικρά αγαλματίδια του Χριστού στο ταμπλό, αναρωτήθηκα πως αν χρειάζεσαι μια φιγούρα πέντε δολαρίων για να θυμάσαι ποιος είναι ο Θεός σου, έχεις καταλάβει πραγματικά τι σημαίνει θρησκεία;» απαντά και συνεχίζει με την εξήγηση που δίνει σε θρήσκους όταν τον ρωτούν για το όνομά του. «Ένας πλαστικός Ιησούς χρησιμοποιείται για να υπενθυμίσει τι είναι καλό στον κόσμο, το πώς θα έπρεπε να δράσουμε και να συμπεριφερθούμε. Το ίδιο προσπαθώ να κάνω και εγώ μέσα από την τέχνη μου» θα πει για να διευκρινίσει πως είναι αθεϊστής, έτσι κάθε παραπομπή θρησκειών μέσα από το έργο του την χαρακτηρίζει ειρωνική και σατιρική. Ένας από τους λόγους, που βλέπει τα πράγματα κάπως κυνικά ίσως οφείλεται στο παρελθόν του ως φωτορεπόρτερ για μεγάλα μέσα μαζικής ενημέρωσης όπως The Times, Newsweek κ.α.
«Έχω περάσει πολύ χρόνο σε ερευνητικές αποστολές για την εμπορία ανθρώπων, το λαθρεμπόριο ναρκωτικών, την πορνεία και το οργανωμένο έγκλημα» αναφέρει. «Σε μερικές από αυτές, ήμουν μυστικός και έπρεπε να προσποιηθώ τον διακινητή ναρκωτικών, τον έμπορο σαρκός ή ακόμη και τον μαστροπό. Έχοντας δει την αθλιότερη και επαίσχυντη πλευρά της ζωής, ακόμα εξακολουθεί να με εκπλήσσει που σε οποιαδήποτε μεγάλη πόλη του κόσμου υπάρχει αυτό το σκοτεινό υπόβαθρο της ύπαρξης που συμβαίνει καθημερινά και ότι οι άνθρωποι δεν το γνωρίζουν καν. Ένας έμπορος ναρκωτικών θα μπορούσε να ζει δίπλα σου και να μην το ξέρεις» καταλήγει. Μια ιστορία που έχει ιδιαίτερη σημασία για εκείνον είναι η περίπτωση ενός κοριτσιού που απήχθη καθώς περίμενε το σχολικό λεωφορείο για να πουληθεί ως σεξουαλική σκλάβα. Δεν αργεί όμως να προσθέσει πως «αυτό είναι κάτι που γίνεται σε όλο τον κόσμο. Ανήλικοι -που αρκετές φορές δεν ξεπερνούν τα 12- καταλήγουν νεκροί ή σκλάβοι». Μάλλον και γι' αυτό ως Plastic Jesus στράφηκε στην street art.
Πέρα από τα stencils, o ανώνυμος καλλιτέχνης δεν διστάζει να τοποθετεί κατασκευές σε διάφορες τοποθεσίες που έχουν κερδίσει τις εντυπώσεις τόσο από το κοινό, όσο και από τους κριτικούς. Εκείνο όμως που ίσως δεν είναι τόσο γνωστό είναι πως επιστρέφει στον τόπο του εγκλήματος για να δει τις αντιδράσεις των θεατών αλλά και να βγάλει selfies. «Για μένα ο μοναδικός κριτής οποιουδήποτε καλλιτέχνη είναι η αντίδραση που παίρνει από τον θεατή» συμπληρώνει και πως μια φορά έτυχε να είναι μπροστά όταν κάποιος προσπάθησε να κλέψει ένα κομμάτι της δουλειάς του. «Ένας άλλος τύπος το ήθελε επίσης. Έτσι προσπαθούσαν να διαπραγματευτούν ποιος θα το έχει και ποιος θα το πληρώσει. Κάποιος έκλεψε έναν ολόκληρο τοίχο. Εξαφανίστηκε μέσα σε μια νύχτα (!)» θυμάται χαρακτηριστικά.
Λίγο πριν το τέλος της συνέντευξης, και λόγω της περσόνας που έχει υιοθετήσει, η συζήτηση περιστρέφεται γύρω από το αν ο Ιησούς θα είχε κάποια ένοχη απόλαυση και ποια θα ήθελε να είναι. Η σκέψη του σίγουρα ξεφεύγει από τα συνηθισμένα. «Θα μου άρεσε να υπήρχαν "αποδείξεις" ότι ο Χριστός έπινε πολύ, έκανε ναρκωτικές ουσίες, μιλούσε άσχημα και γενικότερα είχε μια παραβατική συμπεριφορά. Φαντάσου τι θα σήμαινε αυτό για τους φανατικούς. Ο κόσμος τους θα τελείωνε».
